4 Delicious TSA TEKK Plant Protein Recipes That Taste Creamy

The food science behind smoother plant protein shakes, smoothies and protein oats.

We recently shared a few recipes using our TSA TEKK Café Mocha Plant Protein with customers and members of our community, and the response was wonderful. People loved how a few simple ingredients could transform their everyday protein shake into something creamier, richer and more enjoyable.

So, we decided to share four of these recipes with everyone, along with some interesting food science explaining why they work.

If you've tried plant protein before, you may have noticed that its texture can be different from whey protein. Even when the flavour is good, some plant proteins can have a slightly chalky, grainy or dry mouthfeel.

At TSA TEKK, we've worked extensively on our Café Mocha Plant Protein formulation, made from a blend of pea and rice protein isolates, to minimise these textural challenges.

But there's another interesting way to improve the drinking experience: the ingredients you mix your protein with.

And the science behind it is surprisingly fascinating!

Why Does Plant Protein Sometimes Feel Chalky?

Plant protein powders, particularly those made from peas and rice, can contain particles that do not fully dissolve in water.

These particles can contribute to a grainy or powdery sensation in the mouth. Protein composition, processing techniques, particle size and interactions with saliva all influence how a protein shake feels.

The Secret to Creamier Plant Protein? Fat, Texture and Food Science!

One of the simplest ways to improve plant protein's mouthfeel is to combine it with ingredients containing some fat.

Think peanut butter, cashews, yoghurt or milk.

Fat-containing food systems can improve lubrication in the mouth, contributing to sensations of smoothness and creaminess.

However, fat isn't the only useful ingredient.

Bananas, oats and yoghurt contribute thickness and structure, which can change the way a protein shake feels and how its texture is perceived.

Here are four delicious ways to put this science into practice.

5 Practical Food Science Tips for Smoother Plant Protein

You don't always need an elaborate recipe to improve your protein shake.

A few simple adjustments can make a difference.

1. Try ingredients that contain some fat

Nut butters, cashews, milk and certain yoghurts can make protein-based preparations feel richer and creamier.

Fat doesn't chemically remove protein particles, but it may improve perceived smoothness.

2. Use a blender instead of only a shaker

Blending can help break apart powder clumps and distribute ingredients more evenly.

It is particularly useful when adding bananas, nuts, oats or peanut butter.

3. Give your protein time to hydrate

Protein powders need time to interact with water.

Research on pea protein isolates has shown that hydration conditions influence particle size, solubility and viscosity.

Allowing a freshly mixed shake to rest for a few minutes before blending again may help, although the effect varies between formulations.

4. Experiment with the amount of liquid

The ratio of powder to liquid influences thickness and mouthfeel.

For our TSA TEKK Café Mocha Plant Protein, we generally recommend 300–350 ml water for an enjoyable everyday drinking experience.

For smoothies and recipes containing bananas, yoghurt or nut butters, you can adjust the liquid quantity depending on the consistency you want.

5. Remember that creaminess isn't just about fat

A smoothie can feel creamy because of its fat content, thickness, particle distribution and flavour.

Ingredients such as oats and bananas can also produce a pleasant, thicker texture without necessarily adding much fat.

Can You Make These Recipes Completely Vegan?

Absolutely.

Our Café Mocha Plant Protein is made from pea and rice protein isolates, and all four recipes can be prepared without dairy ingredients.

Simply use plant-based milk and, where required, plant-based yoghurt.

However, remember that plant-based milks vary substantially in their protein, fat and calorie content. Check the nutrition label according to your preferences.

A Final Word From TSA TEKK

We believe good nutrition should be scientifically sound, practical and enjoyable.

A protein powder shouldn't require complicated preparation to taste good. That's why we've invested effort into improving the taste and texture of our Café Mocha Plant Protein.

But food science also teaches us that the final eating experience depends on much more than the powder itself.

The ingredients you combine, the consistency you choose and the way you prepare your shake all influence how it tastes and feels.

Sometimes, a banana and a spoonful of peanut butter are all you need to make your everyday protein shake more enjoyable.

These recipes have received lovely feedback from our customers and community, and we'd love for more people to experiment with them.
